I Will If You Will

The World will go dark again at 8:30 PM on March 31 in observance of the Earth Hour. A moment to switch off the light for 60 minutes to save energy and to raise awareness of environmental issues.

The Philippines started participating since 2007. And as this article had pointed out, our observance can go "beyond the hour" if we are really committed in saving our environment so the future generations will savor themselves with the bounty of nature.

To encourage everyone to go beyond the hour, World Wildlife Fund for Nature  (WWF-Philippines) came with the brilliant idea of "I Will If You Will". A dare/challenge game to inspire friends, family and colleagues to pledge in caring for our environment beyond the hour.

You can participate through twitter by tagging the friends you're challenging with a simple statement like the one below:

I will use the stairs instead of the elevator if you will pledge to support the Earth Hour @Maderuchan. At the end of your dare, write “Let’s support #EarthHour” the hashtag #IWIYW, and mention @WWF_Philippines.

January 18, 2011 when our city implemented the city ordinance which required everyone to bring their own bag when shopping. Plastic bags were banned as a step for waste reduction, alienate non-biodegradable products and to raise awareness of the depleting aura of natural resources. A year after the implementation, bringing shopping bags seemed normal to everyone and if you forgot yours you will use a paper bag instead provided by the grocery stores and boutiques where you buy your goodies and clothes.

And it didn't stopped there for me. Brown paper bag have its unique character which fascinates me even more. I love its color and scent and since I'm a sucker for Papemelroti (gifts  and other stuffs made of recycled paper) I came up with the idea of using the paper bags for different purpose whichever deemed appropriate (gift wrapper, notebook, and envelope).

The stuff below is my "Walk and Save Envelope" where I put the money I saved from walking instead of taking the tricycle. The idea benefited me twice cause I was able to save an ample amount everyday and I'll be fit at the same time. And observing the Earth Hour made me realized that there's an additional benefit which is dedicated for the environment  and that is recycling.

Endless ideas about the Earth Hour increases my adrenaline and this whole idea is making me excited. #TheBlissOfSimpleThings isnt it?

  2. Earth Hour is a wonderful idea, but we all need to do more each hour of every day to help make sure our children inherit a healthy earth.

  6. This is nice and I'll participate on this one. But, I've got one thing in mind: does turning off your lights for an hour really save energy? Does preventing someone from using plastic bags REALLY save the Earth? Maybe Yes but for me, it's not!

    It's a matter of self-discipline actually.

Thanks for sharing this one Sey!

  10. that's a good idea, here in States we recycled all the plastics and bottles where you can get some money if you recycled it. So people like me eager to save and get few bucks at the same time I help the environment.

  11. I would use the stairs instead of the elevator (if I could) but our office is on the top floor.

    I'll think of another way.

  15. I am so glad that we are now being more involved and aware in the conservation of our planet. Here the bigger groceries such as M&S charges the use of plastic bags to encourage customers to bring their own, others let you use empty boxes. All supermarkets sell sturdy "Bags for Life" that customers can reuse. They'll even replace them for free when they get torn, and they'll recycle the old bag. And others have biodegradable bags.
There is also a separate bin for recyclables and every area has a recycling tip.
And people should def learn to use the stairs more. In the hospital we tend to leave the lifts to the patients as our hospital is always busy. But I agree that we need to do it more often anywhere we go. 5 steps is equal to 1 calorie!
I love the walk and save envelope sis. What would you do with your savings? =)
So proud of you sis =)

  18. Hi Sey,

I've been watching Signos in QTV 11 every afternoon and I feel sorry for my kids and and everyone in the coming generation. All they will see is floods, lack of fresh fruits and vegetables and beautiful surroundings. We are slowly losing everything that God has gifted us because of what we have done to mother nature. Unfortunately, its a bit too late to do something about it, global warming has started, we feel it and we experience it.

  21. I only participated in this advocacy once, not because I'm not supporting it but because I'm usually out in the mall or some place else during this event. ;)

I like your "walk and save envelope" concept, I usually walk my way from the office to MRT station but I never put my savings on a separate purse or piggy bank, I guess I should do this too. :)

  24. I like your "walk and save" idea.

However the fact that we can actually come up with a lot of ways to save seems somewhat like a tragedy to me. It just indicates how much wasteful habits an average person has these days.
